Multiple Probations Notes

Scriptural Support
Council of Nicea
Multiple Estate doctrine was removed by Catholic translators and transcriptionists during the Constantine overhaul and recapitulation of our Catholic bible as we know it. Some authors and scholars refer to modern Christianity as "Pauline Christianity", suggesting the differences in original Christianity that were introduced by Paul for essentially political purposes (See The Lost Gospel). Anyway, precious gems of the doctrine remain in the canon and passed through Constantine alterations undetected. I offer the following scriptures as evidence:
  1. John 9:2 "And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?" How is a man able to sin before he is born?
  2. Matthew 16:14-15 "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets"Why did the people even consider that a living person could be someone who had already died?
  3. John 1:19-25 "And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?" Pause right there. Why are they asking the already famous John the Baptist who he is? What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No. Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself? The JST version says that John denied them NOT when they asked if he was Elias.
  4. Doctrine and Covenants 27:7 "...and his name should be John, and he should be filled with the spirit of Elias” Of course this could be a metaphor that John would have a similar spirit or mission to that of Elias, but the direct language could also be an unmistakable pronunciation that John and Elias are the same person.
  5. There are two references to Christ's "condescensions" in the Book of Mormon, emphasizing the plural sense of the word, indicating that the spirit of the Savior lived among men in the flesh more than once (2 Nephi 9:53Jacob 4:7)
  6. Joseph Smith Matthew Look at the pronouns that were used about the apostles. Christ speaks to his apostles in the first half of the chapter in third person (they, them, etc). The second half he switches to first person (you), as if to suggest, those present would each be on the earth in new mortal identities during those turbulent times in the Latter-days. This also indicates premortal covenants to be alive at certain turbulent times, which indicates Elohim's trust in these individuals.
  7. Why was Jesus unrecognized as a resurrected being by those who loved and knew him best? (see Luke 24:16; John 21:7; John 20:15 as examples). I have always supposed that Jesus concealed his identity from his disciples, in something like a spiritual cloak or veil, which could be true. But why would he do that? It is easier for me to believe they didn't recognize him, because he was a resurrected being with likely similar but different enough physical features, which were perhaps from a his premortal appearance or a combination of his mortal probations. I do not feel the Savior was resurrected in the body of his estate as Jesus Christ, which was only one of many of the bodies he inhabited (the word body is referred to as a 'robe' in various scriptures, denoting the fact that bodies can be worn like a change of apparel. See Ascension of Isaiah. This is supported by temple language when specific individuals are told which identity [body/robe] to go down in).
  8. Doctrine and Covenants 132:22-25 "For strait is the gate, and narrow the way that leadeth unto the exaltation and continuation of the lives, and few there be that find it, because ye receive me not in the world neither do ye know me.

23 But if ye receive me in the world, then shall ye know me, and shall receive your exaltation; that where I am ye shall be also.

24 This is eternal lives—to know the only wise and true God, and Jesus Christ, whom he hath sent. I am he. Receive ye, therefore, my law.

25 Broad is the gate, and wide the way that leadeth to the deaths; and many there are that go in thereat, because they receive me not, neither do they abide in my law."
  9. Psalm 71:20 - "Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth"
Additionally, while technically not scripture, there are apocryphal records that are also supportive of the doctrine of multiple probations. The Ascension of Isaiah is a volume of scripture that should have been included in our bible and was deliberately chosen by Constantine or those at his appointed council of Nicea to be excluded. It powerfully teaches the doctrine of condescension which is closely tied to multiple probations. Isaiah's vision of heaven was so much before its time that King Manasseh had Isaiah sawn in half, or as put in the Doctrine and Covenants, "sawn asunder". The Mentinah Archives is another valuable Book of Mormon apocryphal record.

NOTES PART II

Eternal Round - For God doth not walk in crooked paths, neither doth he turn to the right hand nor to the left, neither doth he vary from that which he hath said, therefore his paths are straight, and his course is one eternal round. (Doctrine and Covenants 3:2)
Creations - And were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there, and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just; thou art merciful and kind forever; And thou hast taken Zion to thine own bosom, from all thy creations, from all eternity to all eternity; and naught but peace, justice, and truth is the habitation of thy throne; and mercy shall go before thy face and have no end; how is it thou canst weep? Wherefore, I can stretch forth mine hands and hold all the creations which I have made; and mine eye can pierce them also, and among all the workmanship of mine hands there has not been so great wickedness as among thy brethren. And he heard a loud voice; and the heavens were veiled; and all the creations of God mourned; and the earth groaned; and the rocks were rent; and the saints arose, and were crowned at the right hand of the Son of Man, with crowns of glory; And there shall be mine abode, and it shall be Zion, which shall come forth out of all the creations which I have made; and for the space of a thousand years the earth shall rest (Moses 7:30-31, 36, 56, 64).
Estates - And they who keep their first estate shall be added upon; and they who keep not their first estate shall not have glory in the same kingdom with those who keep their first estate; and they who keep their second estate shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever.
And the Lord said: Whom shall I send? And one answered like unto the Son of Man: Here am I, send me. And another answered and said: Here am I, send me. And the Lord said: I will send the first. And the second was angry, and kept not his first estate; and, at that day, many followed after him (Abraham 3:26, 28)
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day (Jude 1:6 )
Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits (Romans 12:16)
Probations Already familiar with this doctrine
And they said unto me: Doth this thing mean the torment of the body in the days of probation, or doth it mean the final state of the soul after the death of the temporal body, or doth it speak of the things which are temporal? (1 Nephi 15:31-32)
2 Nephi 2:21, 30
And the days of the children of men were prolonged, according to the will of God, that they might repent while in the flesh; wherefore, their state became a state of probation, and their time was lengthened, according to the commandments which the Lord God gave unto the children of men. For he gave commandment that all men must repent; for he showed unto all men that they were lost, because of the transgression of their parents.
Mormon 9:28
Be wise in the days of your probation; strip yourselves of all uncleanness; ask not, that ye may consume it on your lusts, but ask with a firmness unshaken, that ye will yield to no temptation, but that ye will serve the true and living God.
Doctrine and Covenants 29:43
And thus did I, the Lord God, appoint unto man the days of his probation—that by his natural death he might be raised in immortality unto eternal life, even as many as would believe;

  1. Eric, thank you for sharing your scriptural references and insights. I can see how this topic would be one that you had great anticipation in sharing. It is for sure a very weighty concept to internalize, but my first impression is that this is a “good” thing to be understood. It will require significant thought and prayer. Just contemplating this brings to mind a hold host of questions. I look forward to the future podcasts.

Here one of my favorite scriptural proof for multiple probations:

Psalm 71:20 Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me AGAIN, and shalt bring me up AGAIN from the depths of the earth.

  7. Eric, I wanted to just click a "Love" button for a simple expression of my feelings, but since I need to write them out on this forum, I'll say more. This whole podcast was more special than I would've expected. Not simply educational--it was emotional and heartfelt from both you and from Julie. There was a reverence for this doctrine that has already drawn a lot of controversy and criticism for you both.
I'd heard the term Multiple Mortal Probation maybe 20 years ago and so it was always a question in my mind. I don't have a testimony of it, exactly. I'd have to really study and pray about it and haven't put in that effort. But what I tell people is that I don't find anything in the scriptures that proves it can't be true. Sure, we use some scriptures to show proof against it, but they aren't really doing it well, if at all. "This is the time for men to prepare to meet God," does not necessarily mean the ONLY time--even though that is our typical interpretation. I believe our Omniscient, Omnipotent Gods likely have the capacity to make multiple mortal probations possible. I believe their science is beyond our comprehension. For any of us to assume we know all their limitations and possibilities is short-sided.

  8. Eric...will you and Julie be discussing more about women's roles and how they ascend? The scriptures do not talk too much about this. Julie has made reference to us being more than just escorts and with President Nelson's talk in the recent Women's Broadcast...the power that women have but not fully realized is coming to light. I would be so grateful to have yours and Julie's thoughts on this.

    1. Hello. I have no doubt that more is coming on women and their true and proper place in the kingdom. This topic to me is one of the most important things that will be rolling out over the next several years, no question. Satan will not be happy when the full truth about women is unearthed.

  10. Thank you for posting this Eric! A while ago I had this put on a shelf. The Lord told me it was time to ask Him and face a few truths I had been kind of hesitant to ask about (including darks and lights in bodies on this Earth). I had to go out for a walk in the forest near my house and I had it confirmed to me that multiple probation is true and that I have been true and faithful to Him for a very long time. That we planned out what would happen in my journey down here together. This and more was confirmed. I am grateful for yours and Julie's dedication and work to teach the truth and remind us to pray for a witness ourselves. Very insightful scriptures. It makes very much sense to my very core. Much Gratitude!

  11. Eric, thanks for all you do! Love your work on the podcasts and can't wait to devour each as they are released - one of each week's highlights for sure.

Regarding MP, when I first learned and seriously considered the doctrine I was so very relieved as I had always wondered how the Savior, being our brother, could have been prepared and spiritually mature as to come down to earth, take a body, never commit any sin nor transgression all while not accessing his Devine physical power to do so (except to bring about the atonement); and do all this on the very first try! It never really felt quite right to me, like He was a special race or somthing - Don't get me wrong, He IS the Savior and I witness of the same and He IS that far ahead of us. But it makes far more logical sense to me that being called and ordained to be a Savior is part of a larger progression within the eternities, including multiple probations and creations leading up to such. At least for me, this resonates true.

Here is one of my favorite quotes on this subject. This is a record from the Nauvoo Temple wherein Brigham Young laid his hand on Heber C. Kimball and ordained him to act as a Savior to a new world. It reads: "[Brigham Young] Ordained him [Heber C. Kimball] to the Godhead, and that he would act as the Savior to a world or worlds." (Nauvoo Temple Records for January 1846).

Another favorite is the following from Heber C. Kimball, at the Salt Lake Tabernacle in the presence of Brigham Young: "Joseph always told us that we would have to pass by sentinels that are placed between us and our Father and God. Then, of course, we are conducted along from this probation to other probations, or from one dispensation to another, by those who conducted those dispensations." (Journal of Discourses Vol. 6, p. 63)

I have a testimony of MMP's. That said, I can see how such a doctrine, if widely taught in a telestial world, could be wrested so that some might postpone their repentance "until they get another shot" on a subsequent probation, etc. Also, if the doctrine isn't well understood, it can be foreign at first to wrap one's head around eternal marriage in context of MMP's - makes having one's sealing made sure by the Holy Spirt of promise that much more important.

Once understood however, MMP's is one of the most exciting (and for me, comforting) doctrines one can encounter. So glad you and Julie are spreading the good news of these forgotten doctrines. Keep up the good work.

  12. Eric, I have a couple questions about this doctrine and I am doing my research to figure out the answers. I came across a couple scriptures that I found to be interesting.

Alma 40:14 - This explains that we will not leave the spirit world until we are resurrected.
Alma 11:45 - This states that our spirits and bodies will be reunited to "never be divided".

I am not denying the doctrine of multiple probation's, however, these scriptures seem to contradict it. Can you help me to understand better what they are saying?

    Thanks

The Doctrinal Significance of "The Callout"

Throughout the history of good and evil on earth there have been many key moments when evil might have prevailed over righteous had the Lord not intervened. Such times demonstrate the Lord's tender mercy to the righteous, along with his vengeance upon the wicked. But despite his miraculous ability to protect and preserve he has always used practical means of separating the righteous from the wicked before exercising judgment. Such will be the case again in a future event. "The Callout", as it has come to be known in some circles, will offer protection during the  Days of Tribulation  to those who hear the Lord's voice, and it will safely lead many of the elect who harden not their hearts into the Millennium (see  Doctrine and Covenants 43:29 ). The Callout is not widely discussed or understood. Just enough has been revealed to start conversation and  lead to speculation. Those who have not studied this subject may think of it as a future event when the saints

A Letter to a Church Divided

Dear Brothers and Sisters, For years I have believed a day of division in our church was coming, but I have always supposed it would be over some controversial political issue, like some of those we have seen in the recent past. Perhaps those issues have caused some division, but I believe there is another division taking place that is closer to the heart of the gospel than those issues. It tugs at the heart and soul of the latter-day church, and the experience of a young boy who knew he could receive divine guidance if he asked for it. Following his miraculous vision, he told his experience to his minister and got the following reaction: "he treated my communication not only lightly, but with great contempt, saying it was all of the devil, that there were no such things as visions or revelations in these days; that all such things had ceased with the apostles, and that there would never be any more of them." ( Joseph Smith - History 1:21 ) I believe in a church buil

Nine Takeaways from an intense study of the Last Days

I recently undertook an intense study of the Abrahamic Covenant. I learned a lot! It put nearly every doctrine and principle I've learned in a global context. I now see that everything in the gospel of Jesus Christ relates to the covenants the Father made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And I see that God is very interested in Abraham's posterity and in protecting them. Later I became curious how those covenants pertained to the Last days, and the Millennium. I have read and reread the books of Isaiah, 1st and 2nd Nephi, key Doctrine and Covenants chapters, and a bunch of general conference quotes. Not surprisingly, I realized the Abrahamic Covenant has everything to do with the Millennium. There were a few other significant lessons I learned along the way. Here are my takeaways from this interesting study: The difficult to understand scriptures are often most critical.  The chapters I have often skipped in scriptures due to their difficulty of interpretation, like Isaiah,
